F4 tornado swept across part of Great Smoky Mountains National Park

On April 27, 2011, an F4 tornado made its way across parts of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The tornado effected areas between Cades Cove and Abrams Creek.

Due to severe damage, a number of trails were closed, including Ace Gap, Beard Cane, Hatcher Mountain, Rabbit Creek, and Wet Bottom. Trails with partial closures were Abrams Falls, Cooper Road, Hannah Mountain, Little Bottoms.

Several campsites were also closed following the tornado.

Over 4,500 trees were blown down during the vicious storm. Fallen trees created over 40 hot tub size craters on Abrams Falls trail.
