Bredesen names Harmon 12th Judicial District Public Defender

NASHVILLE -- Governor Phil Bredesen has named attorney and Assistant Public Defender Jeff Harmon to the 12th Judicial District's Office of Public Defender post. Harmon will fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Phil Condra in November.

"I'm pleased to appoint Mr. Harmon to fill this position and know that his qualifications and experience as assistant defender in this office will make him successful in serving the 12th Judicial District," Bredesen said. "I appreciate his willingness to serve our state in this capacity. I would also like to recognize Phil Condra for his years of service to the state in this position and wish him well in his retirement."

Harmon has practiced law since 1986. During that time, he has worked as assistant public defender for the 12th Judicial District, which includes six counties, since 1992. Prior to that he worked as an associate with Greer and Smith of Dunlap Tennessee, where his practice included trials in civil and criminal courts, and appellate law.

"I greatly appreciate the confidence Governor Bredesen has shown in me by appointing me to this position," said Harmon. "I look forward to continuing this office's commitment to providing quality and fair representation of our indigent clients in the 12th Judicial District. I also want to thank my predecessor, Phil Condra, who led this office with professionalism and integrity, and who established an outstanding track record of service that I hope to emulate."

Harmon, 48, holds a bachelor's of science degree in political science from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and doctor of jurisprudence from the University of Memphis College of Law. He has served as an adjunct instructor for American government at Chattanooga State Community College.

Harmon will serve as public defender until August 2012, when he can run to retain the seat.
