Apple launches apps store for Macs

For years Apple has been setting the standards in the iPad and iPhone apps phenomenon. Now the apps (abbreviation for applications) are available for all Mac computers.

As a way to capitalize on their incredible sale figures, Apple launched over 1000 categorized apps available in 90 countries. As you may ha've guessed, "games" are the most popular paid app, holding 15% of Apple's base. Of the free apps, "Twitter For Mac" is number 1. "Productivity and utility apps" make a stronger showing at their new store than they do on their mobile devices.

Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive says, "The App Store revolutionized mobile apps. We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun."

Apple is also hoping to inspire software developers to switch to Apple and develop new applications while the developers get to retain 70% of their sales.

Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of marketing predicts that Microsoft will follow Apple's lead and begin developing their own app stores. He also states that rival companies like Google and Nokia have already begun.

The store is easy to use and fun. The goal is to move away from hardcopy CD software and trigger a new move toward installing the software at their store.

As for pricing, it looks to be cheaper to visit and download at the store than it is to buy the software at your local store.Half of the apps are between free and $5.00.

More information is available at www.apple.com.
