Royal Explorers hold science summer camp for Knoxville's urban youth
KNOXVILLE – From June 18 to June 29, the Royal Explorers will hold its annual science summer camp for Knoxville-area seventh and eighth graders. The two-week day camp, a partnership with Emerald Youth Foundation, includes hands-on activities that encourage kids to consider a career in science and will conclude with a kayaking trip on the French Broad River and a closing banquet on the Star of Knoxville riverboat.
The Royal Explorers students participate in daily science experiments and local field trips. These trips include exploring Kyker Farm, surveying Ijams Nature Center, learning about the Knoxville Utility Board, touring the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and visiting the University of Tennessee.
Royal Explorers is just one of Urban Alliance’s programs to reach the youth of urban Knoxville. Other programs include Future of Hope, a nine-month practical and theological exploration of issues facing Knoxville for urban high school students; Urban Scholars, a scholarship program established to help promising urban high school students attend Johnson University; and Urban Plunge, an inner-city residential experience for Johnson University graduate and undergraduate students.
