Free special programs for Knoxville cancer victims



Cancer Support Community is offering special programs in June for cancer victims in Knoxville. Everything is free of charge to those impacted by cancer — patients, family members, and loved ones.

- Thursdays, June 1, 15 & 29, 1:00-3:00pm. Knit Your Way to Wellness. Shelley Hecht, Loopville Instructor. Whether you are a novice knitter or an old pro, bring your own project or join others in learning a new one. Special attention will be provided to beginners interested in learning how to knit and experience the meditative quality of knitting. Supplies provided. 865-546-4661. 2230 Sutherland Avenue. - Saturday, June 3, 10:00am-noon. Mindfulness in Everyday Life: Working with Worry and Fear. Ann Pendley, Meditation Instructor. Whether or not you think of yourself as an anxious or fearful person, mindfulness practice can help you deal with your reactions to life’s inevitable threats – both big and small. - Monday, June 5, noon-1:30pm. Quick & Tasty Cooking: Recipes from the Garden. Missy Kennedy, Cooking Instructor. - Wednesday, June 7, 6:00-7:30pm. Utilizing Integrative Medicine for Maximum Healing. Clayton Bell, MD of UTMC Cancer Institute. Trained in both traditional and complementary approaches, Dr. Bell will describe how to maximize your treatment through building health and vitality with diet, exercise, stress reduction and energy medicines. - Saturday, June 10, 10:00-11:30am. Prostate Cancer Networker. - Tuesday, June 13, noon-1:30pm. Nutrition Ammunition: Tips for Managing Weight during and after Cancer Treatment. Beth Booker, MS, MPH, RD. Many people with cancer lose weight during treatment while others find they are gaining weight. Learn how to eat right and stay a healthy weight regardless of which end of the spectrum you land. - Tuesday, June 13, 3:30-5:00pm. Kid-to-Kid: Fun with a Purpose. Kathleen Williams, LCSW. - Wednesday, June 14, 5:30-7:00pm. Family Game Night with the Bikers. Ulman Cross Country Bicyclists. A group of college-age bikers will ride 70-80 miles a day from Baltimore to San Francisco to spread awareness about the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults. They have a lay-over in Knoxville and want to spend time at Cancer Support Community leading games for you. - Thursday, June 15, 1:00-3:00pm. Healing Through Art: Glaze Magic. Cheri Pollack, Art Instructor. - Thursday, June 15, 6:00-7:30pm. Family Bereavement Group. CSC is committed to providing bereavement services to those who have lost a loved one to cancer. - Saturday, June 17, 11:00am-12:30pm. Family Fun in the Kitchen. Kathleen Williams, LCSW and Chef Joseph Blauvelt, UT Culinary Instructor. Saturday Family Fun Day is a chance to hang out and spend time with other families living with a cancer diagnosis. Get kids cooking with easy recipes and essential kitchen skills with Chef Blauvelt. - Wednesday, June 21, 5:00-6:30pm. Calmer Body, Calmer Mind. Denise Stillman, PhD. Held at Brig Center for Cancer Care and Survivorship located at 1400 Dowell Springs Blvd., Suite 220, Knoxville. Cancer is stressful, physically and emotionally. Dr. Stillman will discuss our bodies’ response to stress and demonstrate relaxation exercises to calm the body and the mind. RSVP. 865-546-4661. - Saturday, June 24, 10:00am-2:00pm. Facing Cancer Together: Learn, Love, Laugh. A free community-wide event held at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church located at 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville. Featured speakers include medical educator and oncology nurse Jill Weberding, MPH, BSN, RN, OCN; psychotherapist, author and cancer survivor Jeanne Safer, PhD; and comedian, juggler and cancer survivor Scott Burton.
