NORRIS, TN — Dr. Joseph E. Johnson, President Emeritus, University of Tennessee, has joined the Museum of Appalachia’s esteemed Board of Directors.

Dr. Johnson originally joined the University of Tennessee in 1958 where his assignments included alumni relations, public relations, fundraising, governmental relations, campus planning, capital construction, and liaison between President’s office and intercollegiate athletics. He served three years as Vice President for Business and Finance, along with being Executive Vice President and Vice President for Development. He became president in 1990, retiring in 1999, to become President Emeritus. After a one year return to an interim presidency in 2003-2004, he continues to serve the university as President Emeritus today.

A long-time friend of the Museum, Dr. Johnson first served on the Board of Directors during the critical early stages of its evolution into a non-profit organization. He recently agreed to return to the Board, once again bringing his wealth of knowledge and wisdom, at a time when the Museum is seeking maturity in leadership as they move forward in a new phase of their development.

“The Museum is deeply honored to have Dr. Johnson’s support; his guidance and advice are invaluable, and we are truly thankful he believes in our mission and is willing to help us achieve our goals to preserve the Appalachian history and culture,” says Museum President, Elaine Meyer.

As a non-profit, Smithsonian Affiliate museum, the Museum’s mission is to preserve the artifacts and culture of an earlier time; and to instill in the community – regionally, nationally, and internationally -- a greater knowledge of and appreciation for the Appalachian heritage. Memberships are available, providing a year of visits, admission to special museum events, including the July 4th Celebration and The Days of the Pioneer Antique Show, as well as membership in the Smithsonian Institution. For additional information please contact the Museum of Appalachia, 865-494-7680 or museum@museumofappalachia.org.

The Museum is located 16 miles north of Knoxville at I-75, Exit, 122, one mile east.
