Historic Parkridge Neighborhood: Prohibition-Era Home Tour

Spend the afternoon October 26 touring the Historic Parkridge Neighborhood and learning about the history of the temperance movements that eventually led to national prohibition.

A Prohibition-Era Home Tour will be hosted by the Parkridge Neighborhood which encompasses the early Edgewood subdivision which contains many houses built by George Barber, a 19th-century, Victorian house architect. This tour highlights homes of the early 20th century which were built and occupied during the temperance movements.

At a time when prohibition was not commonly recognized, Knoxville lobbied as early as 1907, 12 years before Congress passed the 18th amendment banning the sale of alcohol. Large demonstrations broke out when the 1907 law was passed. Learn about this history as you tour 6 open houses and 3 homes in the Park Place condominiums. The homes will span the era from 1907 until the end of prohibition in 1933, and are good examples of the ongoing revitalization of the neighborhood. In addition, a walking tour of 20 homes not open to the public will also be included. The walking tour will focus on the history of the homes and their former occupants.

The tour will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person. Children under 12 are admitted for free. Parking is available at the Ashley Nicole Park, 620 Winona Street, 37917. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.parkridgecommunity.wordpress.com, or tickets may be purchased until 4:00pm the day of the tour at Ashley Nicole Park. Walking is necessary and many houses have steps.
