Hikers invited for a half-day holiday hike in Sugarlands

KODAK, TN – Get in the holiday spirit with Friends of the Smokies’ final Classic Hike in 2013. Join renowned hiking author and guide, Danny Bernstein, December 17 on Old Sugarlands Trail for a short day-hike to Sugarlands Cemetery and last-minute holiday shopping trip at Sugarlands Visitors Center.

Participants will enjoy a 5 mile hike along Little Pigeon River in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). This hike is easy in difficulty with a total elevation gain of 800 feet.

Hikers will visit historic homesites, Sugarlands Cemetery and nearby Cataract Falls. Afterwards, they will warm up inside Sugarlands Visitor Center while enjoying the newly refurbished natural history exhibits. Participants can cross the last few items off their holiday shopping list in the Great Smoky Mountains Association bookstore and shop where Friends members enjoy 15% off their purchases.

In honor of Friends of the Smokies’ twentieth anniversary, the Sugarlands Visitor Center natural history museum will be featured on the guided hike; donations to Friends of the Smokies have helped renovate this space and improve visitor services in GSMNP.

This Classic Hike is $10 for current Friends of the Smokies members and $35 for non-members, who will receive a complimentary membership. Members who bring a friend hike for free. All registration donations are tax-deductible and benefit the Smokies Trails Forever program. Meeting locations for the hike will be in Asheville, Maggie Valley, and the Sugarlands Visitor Center.
