Sunflower project 2012

KNOXVILLE -- The Labor Day Sunflower Project will once again transform the western edge of the Krutch Park extension into a floral paradise on Labor Day, Monday, September 2. The project will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m.

LDSP cofounders Gerry Moll and Joshua Bremseth will welcome Knoxville residents representing each city district to weave hundreds of harvested sunflowers into a circular design on a freestanding, 15x15’ chain-link substrate. Once completed, the installation will remain open to the public from Sept. 2-8 and will be prominently featured during the First Friday festivities on Sept. 6. Circle Modern Dance will perform in front of the display from 12-1 p.m. on Sept. 3 and again on Sept. 6 from 7:30-10 p.m.

Labor Day Sunflower Project began in 2007 as a creative means of uniting a single neighborhood, but it has since grown to symbolize the unification of all of Knoxville’s disparate parts. Each sunflower signifies the reward of individual labors while the circle embodies the coordination of those efforts. In keeping with the event’s theme, this year’s installation will feature a video projection displaying several publicly submitted photographs depicting various kinds of work. At the de-installation on Sept. 8, participants will gather the seeds (which will be used to yield sunflowers for the next year’s display) in order to later distribute them to the public, thus concluding this cyclical and unique yearly tradition.

Community sponsors include The Puffin Foundation, Central Business Improvement District (CBID), and the East Tennessee Consulate of the Republic of Slovenia.

The project is supported by Three Rivers Market, Knoxville Arts and Culture Alliance, 4th and Gill Neighborhood Center (The Birdhouse), Beardsley Farm, Knoxville Botanical Gardens, Market Square Farmers Market, Groundswell, Folk + Free Skool, Beaumont Elementary, Random Acts of Flowers, Sow True Seeds and A Place in the Heart Farm.
