KNOXVILLE -- "You've Written a Book, Now What?" Chris Hebert, an author and editor, will be teaching a workshop on Saturday, June 4, 2011 on how to get your first book published. The event is sponsored by the Knoxville Writers' Guild.

"Writing a book is just the first of many challenges," Hebert says. "Having written it, what do you do next? There are as many different types of outlets for books as there are types of books themselves. It can be hard for a writer—especially a first-time writer—to know where to begin."

For example, should you try to find an agent? Should you aim for a major commercial house or for a small nonprofit press? When is self-publishing the most appropriate route?

"In this workshop we'll discuss these questions and others," he says. "And we'll talk about how to think about your own work in the way publishers do."

Hebert earned his M.F.A in creative writing from the University of Michigan. Since 2001 he has been an acquisitions editor at the University of Michigan Press where he works with scholars, novelists, and nonfiction writers. Hebert has published and edited a wide-ranging list of award-winning books spanning numerous disciplines both for scholarly and general readers. His novel, The Boiling Season, is forthcoming from HarperCollins in 2012.

The workshop will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Redeemer Church, 1642 Highland Ave. Cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members.

To sign up, go to www.knoxvillewritersguild.org or send your check to KWG Workshops, P.O. Box 10326, Knoxville TN 37939-0326.
