Knoxville Symphony Orchestra to Perform A FREE Celebration Concert

Two long-standing events in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will join forces this year for a true Night With the Arts Celebration Concert. KSO Resident Conductor James Fellenbaum and the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra, along with the Holiday Celebration Choir, MLK Children's Chorus, Night With the Arts Players and the Austin East Chamber Ensemble will perform East Tennessee's annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Night With the Arts Celebration Concert. The performance, in partnership with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission of Greater Knoxville and the City of Knoxville, will take place on Sunday, January 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the Bijou Theatre. It is the culmination of a week-long celebration of Dr. King's life and legacy, hosted by the MLK Commemorative Commission. The theme of this year's celebration is Illuminate the Dream: Enlighten the World.

"The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Commission is humbled by the opportunity to annually partner with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra during its week-long citywide celebration," says Renee Kesler, Chair of the MLK Commemorative Commission. "The Symphony Orchestra concert this year will bring together the MLK Celebration Choir, The Knoxville Opera, Actors, Dancers, Poets and the debut of the MLK Children's Chorus. We believe that this partnership is vital in our efforts to Illuminate The Dream: Enlighten the World."

The music for this performance draws from both traditional symphonic works and gospel music and includes Lift Every Voice, Visions, a movement of Mozart's Divertimento in D Major with the Austin East Chamber Ensemble, I Will Give Thanks Unto Thee, Praise, Encourage Yourself and We Are The World/We Shall Overcome, among others.

"I'm excited to be conducting this concert again, and this year's tribute will be quite special and different," says KSO Resident Conductor James Fellenbaum. "This concert will bring together several different cultural performances from the community, and it will be a wonderful and diverse way to honor Dr. King's life and legacy. We'll also be presenting this tribute from the intimate Bijou Theater, and its atmosphere will further enhance the lovely program we've put together in partnership with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Commission."

This concert is FREE and open to the public. There is also free parking available at the State Street garage with complimentary shuttle service between the garage and the Bijou Theatre before and after the concert.
