Tennessee Theatre to host annual ‘Costumes and Classic Cartoons’

KNOXVILLE -- The Tennessee Theatre will hold its annual “Costumes and Classic Cartoons” on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. In addition to showing classic cartoons on the big screen, there will be trick-or-treat stations and self-guided tours, including dressing rooms.

“It’s such a fun experience to hold this event for the community,” said Becky Hancock, executive director of the Tennessee Theatre. “Not only do we get to celebrate Halloween, but we also get to share a big part of the Tennessee Theatre’s past by presenting classic programming. As children, many of us have fond memories watching cartoons on the weekends and spending time with family.”

A short reel of classic Warner Bros. cartoons will be shown at intervals between 2 and 5 p.m., and each screening will be introduced with organ music played by house organist Freddie Brabson on the Mighty Wurlitzer. The trick-or-treat stations will be provided by Mast General Store, and children also can enjoy an area for crafts and coloring. Popcorn and soda will be available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the Historic Tennessee Theatre Foundation.

“We are looking forward to seeing people embrace both the history of the Tennessee Theatre and the spirit of Halloween,” said Nicki Collett, director of development and partnerships for the Tennessee Theatre. “We welcome families to celebrate with us, have fun and take advantage of the opportunity to see the behind-the-scenes areas, which are exciting to learn about and explore.”

The event is free, and attendees are encouraged to wear family-friendly Halloween costumes that are not scary. Toy weapons are not allowed. Free parking is available in the State Street Garage directly behind the theatre.
