Arrowmont announces 2022-2023 Artists-in-Residence

GATLINBURG, TN -- Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts is pleased to announce the 2022-2023 Artists-in-Residence: Yael Braha, Megan Koeppel, Anela Ming-Yue Oh, Jada Patterson, Tyler Quintin. The new residents move to campus in June 2022 to begin their 11-month residency.

Traditionally, Arrowmont’s Artists-in-Residence include artists specializing in distinct craft disciplines such as utilitarian ceramics, woodworking, or weaving. This year, Arrowmont brings together the most multidisciplinary artists to date.

"We are excited to welcome our 2022-2023 artists in residence at Arrowmont, which marks the 32nd group of artists at Arrowmont,” said Nick DeFord, chief program officer. “This group of artists works in interdisciplinary media, crossing boundaries between many different craft processes and forms, and will be traveling from five different locations in North America to join us in Gatlinburg for the next year. We look forward to having them join our Arrowmont community and bring their experiences and creativity to the campus."

Started in 1991, the Arrowmont Artists-in-Residence Program provides early career, self-directed artists time, space and support to develop new work and be an active part of the Arrowmont community. Each year, five artists are selected to participate in the program, which begins in mid-June and continues through late May of the following year.

Arrowmont welcomes the 2022-2023 Artists-in-Residence:

• Yael Braha was born and raised in Italy in a visually abundant environment that shaped her love for composition, aesthetics, and visual arts. She received her BA from the European Institute of Design and her MFA from San Francisco State University. Working at the intersection of craft, art, and multimedia, she creates functional, sculptural and installation work; often fired in atmospheric kilns. Yael received the 2021 Multicultural Fellowship Award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). • Megan Koeppel is a fiber artist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2018, where she studied fine art and curatorial practices. Her work was recently exhibited at Var Gallery (Milwaukee WI), The Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts (Cedarburg WI), Material Gallery + Studio (Milwaukee WI), VisArts (Rockville MD), Monochrome Art Fair (Washington DC) and at Creative Alliance (Baltimore MD). She worked as exhibition programming coordinator at VisArts. meganclairekoeppel.com

• Anela Ming-Yue Oh is a multidisciplinary artist who works with handmade paper, ceramics, and fiber to build new worlds. She holds a BFA from School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Her work inspires a sense of hope; proposing visions of a future that includes marginalized voices. Her work takes a joyful and playful approach while discussing immigrant histories. She was Artist-in-Residence at Sonoma Ceramics, Teaching Artist-in-Residence at the Oxbow School, and West Bay View Fellow at Dieu Donné Papermill. anelaoh.com

• Jada Patterson was born in Milwaukee. She earned a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute in ceramics and art history. She is a multi-disciplinary artist making work primarily in clay and beeswax. Her work explores the human condition pertaining to identity, material culture and adornment. Patterson was awarded the Benjamin J. Gilman Scholarship through the U.S. Department of State in 2018 and the Inspiration Grant through ArtsKC in 2021. She was gallery coordinator at Belger Crane Yard Studios a studio resident at the Charlotte Street Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri. jadapatterson.com

• Tyler Quintin is a Korean-American ceramic sculptor, born and raised in Topeka, KS. He earned a BFA in studio art from Washburn University and has participated in artist residency programs at the Haystack Mountain School of Craft and the Morean Center for Clay. Quintin’s work is informed by his experiences growing up as a minority in a predominantly white family, as well as his experiences as a gay man. His work draws inspiration from virtual spaces. His clay figures act as personal avatars to give physical presence to moments generated through a screen. tylerquintin.com

Founded as a settlement school in 1912 by the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women, Arrowmont has grown into a national center for contemporary arts and crafts education, supporting learning opportunities for individuals of all skills levels and ages.
