Circle Modern Dance presents live holiday performance

KNOXVILLE – Circle Modern Dance continues its annual holiday tradition of Modern Dance Primitive Light, a Winter Solstice performance of dance and live music, after a year-long hiatus of live performance. The 2021 performances will take place December 15-17 at The Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville.

Modern Dance Primitive Light features performance art by area choreographers, dancers, and musicians. Each performance showcases live music, directed and scored by Klay Brooks. The performances include choreography & improvised work from past and current Circle Modern Dance core members, including Nate Barrett, Meg Beach, and Kimberly Matibag. Also included are work from local guest artists Momentum Dance Lab, belly dance group Zaniyah, and swing dancers Kelly Arsenault & Mickey Fortanasce.

“The two years since our last live performance have been hard for everyone, including artists and arts organizations,” said Amelea Everett, co-director of the production. “We feel incredibly lucky to be able to bring musicians, dancers, and our community together again for Modern Dance Primitive Light.”

Attendees can join the “Pay What You Wish” Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday, December 15 at 7:00 PM or performances on Thursday, December 16 at 8:00 PM and Friday, December 17 at 7:00 PM & 9:00 PM at the beautiful Emporium Center / Arts & Culture Alliance (100 S. Gay Street). Tickets are $15 in advance on Eventbrite and $20 at the door with a $5 discount for students, seniors, and military service members. Modern Dance Primitive Light is a show for all ages and participates in the Penny4Arts program, allowing children to attend for one penny when accompanied by an adult.
