Call for Entries: No Bigger Than a Breadbox

The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville is planning a NEW national, juried exhibition. The exhibition is designed to celebrate the innovation of artists who create work on a small scale and in a broad range of media and styles. The title, No Bigger Than a Breadbox, honors an exhibition of similar nature hosted by Bennett Galleries more than a decade ago.

Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will be selected by the juror, Marga Hayes McBride, for exhibition in the Balcony gallery of the Emporium Center at 100 S. Gay Street, Knoxville’s downtown arts anchor location, from July 5-26, 2019. The Emporium is free and open to the public Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (and additional hours for special events).

The deadline for entries to be received is Sunday, May 19, 2019.

Prizes include at least $1,000 in cash awards.

Artists may find more information and complete an entry form at www.knoxalliance.com/breadbox.

Entries must be original and completed within the last two years. Work must be no more than 12 inches (12”) in any direction including the framing, mounting, or video monitors. The artwork may represent any subject matter. All media—including oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, drawings, sculpture in any medium, jewelry, collage, printmaking, photography and digital media—will be considered. The nonrefundable entry fee is $30 for up to three works ($20 for Arts & Culture Alliance members and students). Up to three additional entries may be submitted for $5/each ($4 for members/students).

About the juror: Sculptor, painter, and mixed media artist Marga Hayes McBride has been “making things” ever since she can remember. She has worked in the artistic field all of her life, beginning as a layout artist on Music Row in Nashville, TN, to becoming Art Director for one of the largest hospitals in the USA: St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, AZ. She made the switch to fine art in 1988, working as a gallery assistant, manager, and finally Gallery Director for art galleries in Tennessee. While working in galleries by day, Marga studied drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture at night at the University of Tennessee. In 1995 she began showing her work professionally when she won “Best of Show” in a juried South Eastern Exhibition. Since that time, Marga has shown across the country in fine art galleries and museum exhibitions. Highlights of her career came when she was chosen to exhibit at the international Sculptural Objects and Functional Art Show (SOFA) on the Navy Pier in Chicago, IL, received a four-piece, permanent public installation of a mixed media painting in the Convention Center for the City of Knoxville, TN, and then was featured on the national television show “Country Style” for the Home & Garden Network. She has been exhibited in galleries in Maine, Baltimore, California, Tennessee, Philadelphia, PA, Dallas & Austin, TX, Ann Arbor, MI, Madison WI, New Orleans, LA, Miami, FL, and Chicago IL.
