Jazz Lunch at the Square Room: Tribute to Dexter Gordon with Jamel Mitchell

jamel mitchellThe next concert in the Jazz Lunch series will take place on Wednesday, October 5th, from noon to 1pm at the Square Room. Admission to the concert is $15 and includes a lunch buffet served up by Café 4. Tickets are available online at www.knoxjazz.org or by visiting Café 4 in person prior to the show. The Jazz Lunch performance will feature “Tribute to Dexter Gordon with Jamel Mitchell”.

At 6 feet, 6 inches tall, Dexter Gordon was both literally and figuratively a giant of the tenor saxophone. One of the earliest tenor men to adapt the language of bebop, Dexter was an important early influence on both John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. In a career that spanned more than 40 years, Dexter created an immediately recognizable sound, distinguishable by his large, dark tone, unique sense of swing, and playful melodic sense.

In this special program, saxophonist Jamel Mitchell will draw from Gordon's iconic recordings, performing classics such as "Fried Bananas," "Second Balcony Jump," "Cheesecake," "Laura" and others. Mitchell will be joined by Keith L. Brown (piano), Jon Hamar (bass), and Keith R. Brown (drums).

East Tennessee PBS, WUOT 91.9 FM, The Square Room, and Weird Monkey Studios help support the Jazz Lunch Series.

The Square Room is a state-of-the-art performance venue in downtown Knoxville, TN in the Historic Market Square district. It is housed in the rear of the 4 Market Square Building along with its counterpart Café 4, a full-service restaurant and coffee bar.
