Painter Lynda Best and pipe maker Ron Smith will be the featured artists at the Art Market Gallery from March 1 through March 27. An opening reception for the featured artists will begin at 5:30 p.m., March 4; with complimentary refreshments and music performed by Em Chitty Turner and Brian Sward (easy swing jazz, vocal and guitar).

Best is from Tellico Plains. She has her B.A. Art Education at George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, M. A. in Educational Austin Peay State University and ED.S in Educational Leadership from Lincoln Memorial University. Lynda has taught in public schools and has also been instrumental in starting many art organizations in the places she has lived including Monroe County. Her works are displayed and sold nationally. She specializes in original impressionistic, contemporary paintings of nature. “My ‘self’ is my higher Spirit and with my Spirit I paint the energies I feel from things I see in my natural world. Water and plants are a reminder of change as they follow the seasonal process.”

Smith’s introduction to the burl of the white heath tree, aka briar, began at the Iwan Ries shop, just around the corner from Chicago's Art Institute. Last year he attended the International Pipe Makers Seminar at Chicago and received inspiration and instruction from Lee von Erck, Mike Butera, Jeff Gracik and Rex Poggenpohl. “As much as I admire the classical shapes, it is the Danish school of pipe making which most inspires me - modern, natural, organic in forms which highlight the grain and the outer plateau of the briar. This collection comes from Greek briar which was sold to a number of pipe makers about 30 years ago. I was able to acquire some of this briar from one of my mentors late last year. It gave me an opportunity to create shapes around the grain and to show off the plateau,” said Smith.
