Arrowmont offering spring workshops
Spring is here, temperatures are warming, flowers are blooming. Spend a weekend in the Great Smoky Mountains and immerse yourself in craft. Arrowmont invites interested persons to its campus April 14-17, 2016. Arrowmont offers six workshops in a range of media, great food and wine, fellowship and live music:
Robert Batey – From Cell Phones to DSLR: Nature and Portrait Photography
"The best camera is the one you have with you." Learn how to take great photos with your cell phone using new accessories and apps. This course offers tips and tricks for phone and DSLR cameras. You'll have the opportunity to use recently learned techniques outdoors and explore various types of nature photography. Open to all skill levels. COURSE FEE: $400
Frances Fox – Weaving the Past: Creating a Tapestry from Your Memories
Capture your vision of the mountains and Arrowmont memories with color and texture. Learn how to warp and weave a tapestry on a simple frame loom. Develop new skills and techniques woven with Frances' stories of the Settlement School and history of Arrowmont. You'll gain more understanding of weaving as a craft and the historical connection of Arrowmont and Pi Beta Phi. Open to all skill levels. COURSE FEE: $400
Pat K. Thomas – Dyeing and Marbling Silk Scarves
Learn quick and effective dye techniques to add color to silk fabric. These techniques create color backgrounds for hand-marbled designs and add richness and depth to fashionable silk scarves. Immerse yourself in this fast-paced weekend and go home with hand-dyed scarves for yourself, friends or family. Open to all skill levels. COURSE FEE: $400
Joel Zachry – The Art of Nature: Rambling and Observing Flora and Fauna in the National Park
There's no better season to enjoy landscape, plant life and wildlife activity in the Great Smokies. You'll take informative hikes every day in diverse regions of the Park. Take home new-found knowledge of seasonal flowers, colorful trees and useful skills for detecting animal inhabitants. Learn about the Park's history, culture and struggles of early settlers. In this class, you'll gain confidence in avoiding and handling wildlife encounters and most importantly, leave with new friends. COURSE FEE: $400
Carolyn Berry – Mixed Media Collage with Encaustic Wax
Explore encaustic wax as a medium for collage, stenciling, photo transfer, surface manipulation and working with color. This ancient and versatile medium made from beeswax, damar resin and powdered pigments creates unique layering and surface texture. Bring old photos, documents, magazine images, specialty papers and fabric pieces to incorporate memories or ideas. Explore composition to increase visual understanding and experiment with design. Open to all skill levels. COURSE FEE: $400
Maureen Aderman – Glass Fusing: Cut and Shift
This workshop explores fundamentals of the glass fusing process. Enhance your skills of cutting glass and discover the excitement of firing a kiln. Beyond the basics, you'll explore the "cut and shift" technique using Spectrum's Opal Art glass to create one-of-a-kind functional art pieces. This process adds new dimension of color, pattern and visual interest to your work. You'll complete a plate and small sample pieces of various techniques. This class is a great way to learn new skills, gain inspiration and express your creativity with glass. Open to all skill levels. COURSE FEE: $400
