Knoxville Opera Goes to Church: A concert of gospel, spirituals, opera and Broadway

Home Federal Bank continues its tradition of community support as the presenting sponsor of “Knoxville Opera Goes to Church … A Celebration of Talent,” which is expanding to two concerts this year.

The concerts are a mix of gospel and opera performed by local and guest artists. The events are $10 and will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, at 3:30 p.m. at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, 2500 E. 5th Ave., in Knoxville, and Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at The Community Church at Tellico Village, 130 Chota Center in Loudon.

“We’re delighted that Knoxville Opera Goes to Church continues to thrive and expand,” Home Federal Bank President Dale Keasling said. “Home Federal Bank gladly sponsors this concert that has become a beloved annual tradition for so many people in our community.”

Music Director Jeanie Turner Melton and Knoxville Opera Maestro Brian Salesky will conduct the 40-voice Knoxville Opera Gospel Choir. The Knoxville Opera is the only opera company in the world to have its own gospel choir.

“Knoxville Opera is proud to have this showcase for our gospel choir and our talented guest artists,” Salesky said. “We are thrilled to expand to two concerts this year and appreciate Home Federal Bank’s continued support so that we can present this concert without charge to our community.”

Program selections from the Sept. 26 concert include: “We Fill the Sanctuary,” “In Bright Mansions Above,” “In His Care-O,” “God’s on Your Side,” “Give Me Jesus” and “Nothing is Impossible.” Also on the program are arias and duets from “Show Boat,” “Porgy and Bess,” “Tosca,” “Faust” and the opera “Mefistofele,” which will be performed by the Knoxville Opera on Oct. 9 and 11.

Concert soloists include Cody Austin, Scott Bearden, Evelyn Jack, Julia Lima, Michael Rodgers, Donovan Singletary and Ernest Woods. Singletary recently finished the prestigious Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at The Metropolitan Opera and was the youngest male ever to join the program.
