38 BBQ teams ready to fire up at Big BBQ Bash

  herb rieth
Founder’s Square in historic downtown Maryville is preparing for the arrival of BBQ teams from throughout the Southeast. Thirty eight teams will be competing in the annual Big BBQ Bash, a fundraiser for the Helen Ross McNabb Center.

Amidst a backdrop of the scenic foothills of the Smoky Mountains, BBQ pits will fire up early on Friday, June 26. The aroma of some of the south’s best barbecue will fill the air as thousands of supporters begin arriving at this Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned, professional barbecue cook-off. KCBS sanctions barbecue and grilling competitions across the U.S. and offers an extensive Certified Barbecue Judging program.

Participating teams include Chairman of the Boar, Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hog, Hoggy Bottom Boys, Shiney Hineys, and Soggy Bottom Smokers,

Governor Bill Haslam has proclaimed the Big BBQ Bash as a state championship, making the competition a qualifier for the American Royal Barbecue Cook-Off and Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue. The 2015 competition also serves as the third leg of The Triple Crown, a series of barbecue competitions in Knoxville, Sevierville and Maryville.

Since 2007, the Big BBQ Bash has raised nearly $125,000 for charitable causes in Blount County. All proceeds from the 2015 Big BBQ Bash will benefit mental health, addiction treatment and social services provided by the Helen Ross McNabb Center in Blount County.

The Big BBQ Bash is in conjunction with Maryville’s Summer on Broadway festival. For more information regarding Summer on Broadway, visit www.summeronbroadway.net.
