Knoxville Children’s Theatre offering summer acting classes for kids



Knoxville Children’s Theatre, a non-profit theatre producing theatre for children by children, will hold week-long, intensive acting classes during late June and July. Most classes will culminate in a “showcase” presentation for family and friends at the end of the term. All classes include 2 free tickets to a KCT performance.

Tiny Thespians, Ages 4-5
June 22- 26
9:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

A bridge to our “Page to Stage” class and future audition opportunities, this class introduces young thespians to the craft of theatre. The class focuses on harnessing the natural curiosity and wonder of this age group as a means of building confidence onstage and encouraging an early interest in theatre. In addition to acting exposure, students will be introduced to the various elements of theatre, including costumes, props, and set. Games, story time, and crafts are the main components of this class, all of which focus on a weekly theme. The final showcase includes a group presentation of a popular children’s book, such as Eric Carle’s “The Hungry Caterpillar.” No reading ability or prior experience is required.

July 13-17
Performing Power - Ages 13 & up
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Performing Power, developed by H. Wesley Balk was developed initially for Opera students to help them incorporate comfortable use of body and facial expression to enhance vocal performance. Performing Power is an excellent tool and beneficial for all performers of theatre, musical theatre and opera. Performing Power isolates, strengthens and coordinates the three projective modes, Voice, Facial/Emotional, and Body/gesture. It’s a fascinating, fun, highly effective technique for performers. Recommend prerequisites: Musical Theatre or Advanced Acting.

Introduction to Acting Ages 12-14
July 13-17
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

This class is designed to develop the confidence and creativity of the actor. Students will study correct vocal projection, stage movement, character development, and objective based acting. The class begins with group exercises and will also include opportunities for individual development and partner work. The class concludes with a brief showcase of scene work.

Acting 2: Character Acting - Ages 11 & up
July 20-24
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

At KCT, actors are often called upon to play Geese, Goblins, Centaurs, Centipedes, Swans, Foxes, Eagles and Elves. This class focuses on how to jump from the ordinary to the extraordinary through observation, imitation, and transformation in partnered scenes, group exercises and individual journal work. It combines unique movement study with elements of traditional method acting principles to help actors employ of all their tools to make non-human characters from the imagination spring to life.

Creative Movement for the Stage - Ages 12 & up
July 20-24
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

An important element of acting is transforming the body in a believable and distinct way that gives the character life through well-defined movement choices. This class will help participants identify and eliminate tension and habitual movement in their characterizations and give them tools to help them communicate clearly and cohesively. Students will study the Laban efforts of movement in depth and be introduced to a variety of other techniques to help maximize their physical potential.
