KNOXVILLE — This summer, fun was spelled “ART” for 17 lucky youth from Knox County Elementary Schools, selected by their art instructors to receive an art class scholarship. The Fountain City Art Center was awarded $2,000 this year by the Gene and Florence Monday Foundation and by the TN Arts Commission. The later grant, known as ABC, or Arts Build Communities, is administered by the Arts and Culture Alliance of Knoxville.

Student art class fees and supplies were covered by the grant funds. Jan Bolus, art teacher at Brickey-McCloud Elementary during the school year, taught two classes at the Center, one for ages 6-8 and another for ages 9-11. These classes offered creative multi-media projects weaving, air brushed t-shirts, handmade musical instruments, linoleum prints, clay figures, and much more. Roger Bench instructed a clay class, teaching students to use the wheel for throwing clay, and how to glaze and fire pottery.

Without these generous grants, the Fountain City Art Center would not have been able to sponsor the Summer Art Camp. The Center’s goal is to be able to offer at least 30 art class scholarships each year to youth and to senior citizens in financial need. The FCAC Executive Director and Board of Directors are grateful to the foundations and organizations that realize the importance of art in the lives of our community’’s youth.

Jan Bolus will be offering 5 weeks of classes beginning June 26 for youth ages 6-11. Drop by the Art Center if you are interested.

Fountain City Art Center is located at 213 Hotel Avenue next to Fountain City Park. Hours: Tu, Th 9-5; W, F 10-9; most Saturdays 9-1. Classes are offered for adults year round. The next exhibit, free admission, is the 9th Annual FCAC Open Show, reception Friday, June 20, 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
