​Major music events scheduled for new Natalie L. Haslam Music Center

KNOXVILLE – The University of Tennessee School of Music is celebrating the opening of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center this year by hosting special events and by inviting local and national music celebrities to perform in the new facility.

Locally, several Knoxville Symphony Orchestra members have performed or will perform in special concerts with UT Music faculty. Piano greats Andre Watts and Byron Janis are also coming – Watts on February 9th and Janis on Feb 26–March 2, when the School will host a 5-day workshop/birthday celebration honoring Janis’s life and career.

In addition, on February 13-15, 2014, the UT School of Music will host a three-day Joint Regional Conference of The College Music Society Southern Chapter and Mid-Atlantic Chapter/ Association for Technology in Music Instruction. Renowned trumpeter Doc Severinsen, band leader for thirty years on The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson, will be the keynote speaker at the conference and will announce the $10,000-cash winner of The International Doc Severinson Composition Contest.

International Championship of College A Cappela, South Quarterfinal
Competition; The Varsity Vocals International Championship of A Cappella is the only international tournament that showcases the art of student a cappella singing. Each year, the tournament takes place from January through April in regions across the United States and Europe. For the college torunament (ICCA),each region holds several quarterfinals events. The top two college groups at each quarterfinal advance to the regional semifinals. The winner of each semifinal is invited to participate in finals, held in New York City, where they compete for the coveted title of Grand Champion.

UT faculty Miroslav Hristov and guest artist and KSO's harpist Cindy Hicks will present a program compiled of known and not so known works for violin and harp. The first half will induldge the artists in two pieces from the standard repertoire: Louis Spohr's Sonata in C minor and Camille Saint-Saens' Fantasie. The second half will introduce a relatively new (1998), monumental sonata by Ukranian composer Valeri Kikta.

Most concerts and events will be in one of three performance halls on campus: Sandra G. Powell Recital Hall in the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center located at 1741 Volunteer Boulevard; James R. Cox Auditorium and Performance Hall 32, both in the Alumni Memorial Building located at 1408 Middle Drive.

PARKING: Concert parking is available in the lot behind the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center located at 1741 Volunteer Blvd., Knoxville TN 37996 on the UT campus.

Parking for concerts at the Alumni Memorial Bldg: When no major sporting event coincides with a concert, parking may be available in the large Lot 9 directly across street from the Alumni Memorial Bldg.

Public Parking: The UC Garage is closed. Follow ConeZone signs to Volunteer Hall Garage on 16th between White Ave and Clinch Ave, or park at a meter on the street. It is a 3 block walk to the Alumni Memorial Bldg.

Public Paid Parking (Level 1, enter and exit off of White Avenue) and N17 (Levels 2-5, enter and exit off of Clinch Avenue).
