Knoxville Symphony Orchestra announces 2013-2014 season
KNOXVILLE -- The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Lucas Richman have announced both the upcoming 2013-2014 Moxley Carmichael Masterworks and Chamber Classics Series. The 2013-14 season marks the KSO’s 78th season. All eight Masterworks programs will be held at the Tennessee Theatre on Thursday and Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Maestro Lucas Richman unless otherwise noted. All five Chamber Classics concerts will take place on Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. at the Bijou Theatre. Single tickets will go on sale in August 2013.

Subscriptions to the 2013-2014 Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Series start at just $148 and are on sale to the general public beginning Monday, February 18. Opening Night: EROICA TRIO PLAYS BEETHOVEN

The KSO will open the season with Reznicek’s Donna Diana Overture, followed by Beethoven’s Concerto for Violin, Cello & Piano, for which the Orchestra will be joined by the Eroica Trio. Whether playing the great standards of the piano trio repertoire or daring contemporary works, the three young women who make up this celebrated ensemble electrify the concert stage with their passionate performances. This will be followed by Kodaly’s Hary Janos Suite and conclude with Wagner’s Rienzi Overture.

October’s Masterworks concert will open with Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal. This is followed by the world premiere of Lucas Richman’s first Piano Concerto, In Truth. Pianist Jeffrey Biegel returns to Knoxville from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College. The second half of the program includes Grofe’s Mississippi Suite and Gershwin’s An American in Paris.

November’s Masterworks concert is an all-Mozart concert, opening with Mozart’s Overture to Idomeneo. This will be followed by his Violin Concerto No. 4 where the Orchestra will be joined by world-renowned violinist Lara St. John. Playing the violin from the age of two, Lara first appeared as a soloist with orchestra at age four and since then she has recorded 10 albums, acquired her own record label and performed with orchestras around the word. Mozart’s A Musical Joke and his Symphony No. 31 conclude the program.

In January the orchestra will welcome guest conductor Sean Newhouse to the stage for a New Year’s-themed concert. Maestro Newhouse was appointed Assistant Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra by Maestro James Levine in February 2011 after stepping in on two hours’ notice to conduct Mahler’s Ninth Symphony and held this position until the beginning of the 2012-2013 season. The concert will open with Strauss’ Overture to Die Fledermaus and will then be joined by guest pianist Louis Schwizgebel for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23. Currently studying at The Juilliard School in the classes of Emanuel Ax and Robert McDonald, Louis is a world-class pianist who studied at the Lausanne where he passed the soloist diploma at age fifteen. The second half of the program includes Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty: Suite Op. 66a and Strauss’ Emperor Waltzes.

UT Choral Ensembles
Nmon Ford, baritone
In February, the University of Tennessee Choral Ensembles return to join the orchestra for a performance of Bloch’s rarely heard Sacred Service. Written in 1933, this work is the lone orchestra and choral setting of the sacred Jewish service and will feature baritone Nmon Ford. Yardumian’s Veni, Sancte Spiritus opens the concert. Also on the program is Hovhaness’ Symphony No. 2, “Mysterious Mountain.” Nmon Ford, a Panamanian-American baritone, was a featured soloist on the 2010 Grammy Award-winning Transmigrations (Telarc) CD with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and the four-time 2006 Grammy Award-winning recording William Bolcom’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience (Naxos) CD, including "Best Classical Recording," featuring the University of Michigan School of Music Symphony Orchestra.

In March, KSO Resident Conductor James Fellenbaum makes his debut on the KSO’s Masterworks series conducting a program of all Bach. Audiences can hear all six Brandenburg Concerti over the course of two evenings. Both performances will open with Stokowski’s arrangements of Bach’s Toccata & Fugue and Partita No. 2: Chaconne. Thursday’s performance will include Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto Nos. 4, 3, & 1. Friday’s performance will include Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto Nos. 2, 6 & 5. Audiences are invited to attend both shows to hear the complete Brandenburg Concerti and subscribers can add the program not included in their subscription for only $10.

In April the orchestra will present Nielsen’s Maskarde: Overture and Nielsen’s Maskarde: Cockerel’s Dance. Guest pianist Andrew Staupe will join the Orchestra for Grieg’s famous Piano Concerto. Andrew Staupe has appeared with the Minnesota Orchestra on five subscription series performances since 2006, and has performed with the San Diego Symphony, Houston Symphony, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and many other orchestras throughout the United States. This program concludes with Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5.

The KSO’s 2013-2014 season ending concerts will open with Beethoven’s Fidelio Overture. The Orchestra will be joined by guest pianist Spencer Myer in a return engagement performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4. Gold Medalist of the 2008 New Orleans International Piano Competition, Spencer Myer returns from playing solo recitals and chamber music collaborations throughout the United States. He will also play this season with New York City’s Park Avenue Chamber Symphony, California’s North State Symphony and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. The program concludes with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10.

To open the Chamber Classics Series, the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra will perform Rossini’s Italian Girl in Algiers. Led by Resident Conductor James Fellenbaum, the Chamber Orchestra will be joined by UT Professor of Piano David Brunell for Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1. This will be followed by Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No. 1 and the program will conclude with Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite.

In January, Maestro Lucas Richman will conduct the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra in an all-Mozart program beginning with the Overture to Idomeneo. KSO Principal Flute Ebonee Thomas will be featured in Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra in G Major. The second half of the program includes Mozart’s A Musical Joke and his Symphony No. 31.

In March the Chamber Orchestra will open with Handel’s Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 5 in D Major followed by Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major. The program continues with Vivaldi’s Concerto in D Minor, Op. 3, No. 11, followed by Albinoni’s Adagio and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D. Major.

The KSO’s Principal Quartet will take center stage for April’s Chamber Classics concert performing Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 64, No. 5 in D Major “The Lark.” This will be followed by Villa Lobos’ String Quartet No. 1, A99 and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor, “Death and the Mainden.” Principal Quartet members include: Gordon Tsai, violin; Edward Pulgar, violin; Kathryn Gawne, viola; and Andy Bryenton, cello.

As the Chamber Classics season concludes in May, Maestro Lucas Richman conducts Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major and Beethoven’s Prometheus Overture. The program features the talents of KSO Concertmaster Gabriel Lefkowitz in several stunning showstoppers including Beethoven’s Romance No. 2 in F Major, Sarasate’s Ziguenerweisen and Paganini’s La Campanella.
The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra has contributed to the cultural life in East Tennessee since 1935. The KSO is part of the Knoxville Symphony Society which includes the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville Symphony Pops Orchestra, Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra, five orchestras of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association and several smaller performing ensembles. Under the leadership of Lucas Richman, the orchestra consists of more than 80 professional musicians and performs more than 200 programs throughout East Tennessee each season. Performing in traditional venues such as the Tennessee Theatre, Bijou Theatre and the Civic Auditorium, and in non-traditional places like hospitals, school classrooms, nursing homes, city parks and churches, the KSO reaches more than 200,000 people throughout the region each year.
Lucas Richman has served as Music Director for the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra since 2003 and as Music Director and Conductor for the Bangor Symphony Orchestra since 2010. His command of the core repertoire, coupled with his finesse in presenting new and contemporary works, continues to illustrate Mr. Richman as a source of musical expertise and artistic excellence.
