Read to the Animals Night

KNOXVILLE -- Young-Williams Animal Center will host "Read to the Animals Night" on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 7-10 p.m. at the shelter located at 3201 Division St. off Sutherland Avenue in Knoxville.

Families are encouraged to attend the special event, where kids of all ages can read to the adoptable dogs and cats. Hidden inside the storybooks will be discount coupons for $10, $25 or $50 off any adoption fee as well as some free adoption coupons.

Kids are welcome to come in comfy clothes or pajamas, and light refreshments will be provided.

"Join us to celebrate back-to-school time with this fun event for kids and our adoptable pets," said Amy Johnston, director of outreach for Young-Williams Animal Center. "We hope that the night leads to many happy endings for these animals – a loving, forever home."

Young-Williams Animal Center is one of 50 nationwide shelters competing in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. During the months of August, September and October, Young-Williams is competing to find homes for more cats and dogs than during the same period in 2011. The Challenge goal is to save at least 300 more animals, and for Young-Williams Animal Center, that means saving a total of 1,512 lives. The shelter that saves the most animal lives during this three-month period, beyond the baseline goal of at least 300 more lives than during the same time period last year, will win the $100,000 grand prize.

To encourage adoptions now through October, Young-Williams Animal Center will be offering promotions with free or reduced adoptions fees like the "Read to the Animals Night" this Saturday as well as events to raise money to offset the cost of reduced adoption fees.
