KNOXVILLE -- Vestival, the South Knoxville Art and Heritage Festival will take place on May 12, the Saturday before Mother's Day. Festivities will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 7 p.m.

Along with lots of activities for the entire family, there will be a special tribute to mothers with a Mother's Day Brunch (free to mothers) at 11 a.m.

Vestival includes 2 stages of music, children's activities, food vendors, arts and craft vendors (where you can buy your mom a gift). There are art and history exhibits where you can learn the interesting story of the Candoro Marble Factory where the Candoro Arts and Cultural Center is now located.

Activities include a cake walk, maypole dance, open mic, one world circus, belly dancers, and an arts and crafts tent.

Eleven bands will play throughout the day, including Marina Orchestra, Mountain Soul, Mike Mcgill, and The Gladson Family Band.

The purpose of Vestival is to provide a diverse cultural and artistic event to the general public. Particular emphasis is placed on serving the citizens of the Vestal community, a community that was once a vibrant industrial community when the Vestal Lumber Company and the Candoro Marble Works were major industrial organizations. After these two companies closed, Vestal went into economic decline. It is part of the City of Knoxville empowerment zone due to its poverty level, unemployment rate, poor housing conditions and low educational levels.
