25 Fun Things to Do in Knoxville 4th of July Weekend! >

July 4th Celebration and Anvil Shoot

Date: July 4, 2011
Time:
Location: Museum of Appalachia

The Museum of Appalachia's July 4th Celebration & Anvil Shoot recreates an old-fashioned Independence Day with the ever-dramatic anvil shoot, authentic old-time music, patriotic ceremonies, demonstrations of pioneer skills, and summertime picnic fare.

The anvil shoot is always the highlight of the Museum's July 4th festivities. Several times during the day, gunpowder is packed under the anvil and ignited. With a resounding boom, the hunk of iron bursts from a cloud of smoke, sometimes catapulted as high as the treetops. The earth literally shakes, and the deafening boom, it is said, can be heard as far as 15 miles away.
