The big event in Knoxville on Saturday, June 25, 2011 is at the Cove at Concord Park. Teams will be racing for prizes and raising money for hope and healing at Knox Area Rescue Ministries.

The Knoxville Dragon Boat Festival begins at 8:00 a.m. featuring the most fun, adrenaline-pumping action in Knoxville.

In its 9th year, the Knoxville festival has grown from 10 the first year to 61 in year 8. More than 70 teams are expected to participate this year.

Teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer and steerer race in authentic Hong Kong-style, 46-foot-long dragon boats. All ages, skill levels and physiques participate, making it the ultimate team building sport, requiring synchronicity and finesse, more than power to win. The Knoxville Dragon Boat Festival showcases competitive community and corporate teams racing for title of Grand Champion.

In addition to the boat races, land activities will include cultural festivities, music, food, kid's fun and learning area.

Dragon boat teams will have their tents decorated, and they wear their dragon apparel and cheer throughout the event.

This unique cultural event, according to legend, originated in China more than 2,300 years ago.
