Beef it up at the Northeast Tennessee Beef Expo on October 9

KNOXVILLE – Beef cattle producers will have an opportunity to beef it up at the 2014 Northeast Tennessee Beef Expo on Thursday, October 9. The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture will host the event at the UT AgResearch and Education Center in Greeneville. Numerous educational seminars and a trade show will be featured.

UT experts from Extension, AgResearch and the College of Veterinary Medicine will speak on topics of interest including electric fencing, flies and pinkeye, weed control for pastures and the essentials of working facilities.

Organizer Milton Orr, director of Greene County’s UT Extension Office, is pleased to announce two special guest speakers from the University of Kentucky: Steve Issacs and Kenny Burdine. “We are especially proud to have two very special and renowned speakers to address an orderly repopulation of the beef herd. Dr. Steve Isaacs and Dr. Kenny Burdine will address key issues of an orderly increase in cow numbers while protecting the market composition,” said Orr. Issacs is an East Tennessee native and currently serves the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture in the department of Agricultural Economics. Burdine grew up on a Kentucky farm that raised tobacco, sheep and beef cattle.

Neal Shrick, head of the UT Department of Animal Science, will also make a special presentation to attendees.

Registration and a trade show will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 8:30. The cost is $10 if preregistered, and $15 the day of the event. The fee includes lunch, but lunch is not guaranteed to individuals who register the day of the event. Participants may preregister at their county UT Extension office by Wednesday, September 24.

The Northeast Tennessee Beef Expo is an annual presentation of UT Extension and UT AgResearch. Its purpose is to help farmers enhance the efficiency of their operations to make them more profitable.

The UT AgResearch and Education Center at Greeneville is located off U.S. Highway 70 approximately five miles south of Greeneville on East Allens Bridge Road.
