Austin-East Magnet High School Forensics Team takes top honors at state competition
Austin-East Magnet High School takes top honors in state competition.

KNOXVILLE — The newly formed Forensics Team at Austin-East Magnet High School competed in state competition April 11-12, 2014, in Brentwood, TN, and came away with many top honors against 44 other teams. The Austin-East team was formed this year by performing arts teacher Doug James and is comprised of 12 members in grades 10-12. It is a competitive theatre team that competes in both acting and speech events.
State competition results include:
• In Duo Interpretation (a 10-minute piece when actors are not allowed to look at or touch each other), the team received 1st Place with a piece entitled “The Face of Emmett Till.” The two actors were Malik Baines and Stephanie Spidell. Team members, Jackson McDowell and Ashley Toepfer, placed 3rd in this category.
• In Duet Acting (a 10-minute piece when actors can touch and look at each other), the team placed 2nd. Actors were Skai Harris and Moriah Brothers.
• In One-Act Play competition (a 45-minute theatre piece where actors must perform and do technical assistance without assistance), the Austin-East team placed 5th.
• Additionally, two actors were chosen to be a part of “All-Star Cast,” which is the top 10 actors of the day. The Austin-East students chosen for this honor are Malik Baines and Moriah Brothers.
Austin-East Magnet High School has been chosen to host state competition in 2015.
